After visiting the statue down in York last week and trying to gather data from personal that are familiar with the area I found it a bit troublesome. I was able to visit the Historical society down in York were I was able to look at old paper clippings and written letter back in forth from the town of York and the town of Kingstree where the other statue is located. I tried to speak with the woman at the library about what she knew about the statue and I asked for permission to record any information that she had on the statues but quickly turned and grabbed the files for me to look at. After looking through the large collection that they have about the statue and the thoughts behind. I began to just talk with her and not transcribe anything since most of the material I have already either read or have heard. I asked if their was anyone that she knew of that could maybe give me more details about this topic but she could not point me in the right direction.
I am beginning to think that my data collection and Analysis like in (Martin pg. 84) is going to be me going through old papers and gathering my information this way. It is almost like the transcribing part is done for the most part and I am going to decipher the information myself and make sense of it all. I am trying to get in touch with Kingstree historical society to see if I can get anymore information. It is very interesting the more I dig the stories I have read about what might have happened and this is not the only case of confederate looking soldiers popping up in the north.

I guess I hadn't really understood the controversy around this statue until I just read your blog. I love reading about small-town controversy, and I can only imagine that this was the talk of the town for a very long time. I read this little article about it which I'm sure you have seen but others may be interested in...

Interesting...can't wait to see where your research leads!
ReplyDeletePatrick, I have a copy of Tony Horowitz's book, "Confederates in the Attic," which is mentioned in the article Liz posted above. There are a couple of pages about the statue controversy in York and Kingstree. I'll bring the book to class tomorrow in case you want to borrow it for your project.
