Prior to today, I did not have a concrete idea of what the class would be about. I am thrilled to explore Oral History and Social Work through the readings, class discussions, the oral history project and even through blogging. I have actually never blogged before, so this is will be a unique way of learning and interacting with you all.
The video that we watched in class today with Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was enriching and filled with perspectives that opened my mind to how the single story is really an incomplete story. In my notes, I wrote down "stereotypes are incomplete" as Adichie stated. I've always known that stereotypes were just an idea or assumption of a person or population, but thinking of it as incomplete made me understand the true meaning of a stereotype. I never heard of Adichie prior to today, but as soon as she began to speak her voice sounded so familiar. I kept thinking to myself where have I heard this voice before? Then it clicked, their is a song by Beyoncé titled flawless and in the middle of the song a speaker interrupts and argues about the expectations of women and how it can damage economic and social prospects around the world. I googled it and found out that Beyoncé sampled Adichie's call to feminism speech. I thought that was interesting and wanted to share! I am leaving for Atlantic City early tomorrow morning to celebrate my cousins wedding, so I will not be in class Wednesday. I look forward to more blogging and enriching discussions!
Here is a link to the song. If you are not a fan of Beyoncé and just want to hear her speech it cuts in at 1:26 :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBe9Vtodzg4
